After completing high school, Paolini started working on Eragon, the first novel in a series set in the land of Alagaesia. He published Eragon in 2002 through Paolini International LLC, his parents’ small self-publishing company. His subsequent books were also published through the same company.
Paolini’s literary inspirations are the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and E.R. Eddison. He specifically cites Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, a book by Bruce Coville, as the inspiration for Eragon.
The Inheritance Cycle has sold over 33 million copies to date. In the summer of 2004, the stepson of Carl Hiassen, an American journalist, found Paolini’s book on a bookstore shelf and loved it. Hiassen then brought the book to the attention of his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, a New York publishing house.
