Lupita Nyong’o was born in Mexico to Dorothy Ogada Buya and Peter Anyang ‘Nyong’o. This happened after her parents moved from Kenya in 1980 due to a political crisis. She was born on March 1, 1983. Both her paternal and maternal sides are Luo. Her name was Lupita, a diminutive of Guadalupe, as it is Luo tradition to name a child after the events of the day they were born. Her family returned to Kenya a few months after her birth. They lived in Nairobi in the early stages of their childhood. When she was 16, her parents sent her to Mexico to study Spanish.
Coming from an artistic background, Lupita developed an interest in acting. Reportedly, children’s performances and trips to plays were an important part of their family gatherings. She also acted in school plays while at Rusinga International School in Kenya.
Her professional acting career began with a role as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, a production by Nairobi-based repertory company Phoenix Players. At the same time, she continued to play The Razzle and There Goes the Bride.

She later attended St. Mary’s School in Nairobi and received an IB Diploma in 2001. She left Kenya to continue her education in the United States. In the US, she enrolled at Hampshire College, where she earned a degree in film and drama.
Her time on the production crew ended when she was inspired to try acting by British star of The Constant Gardener, Ralph Fiennes. In 2008 she played a role in a short film “East River”. Out of love for her native country, she returned to Kenya and starred in Kenya’s TV series Shuga, a UNICEF/MTV Base drama about HIV prevention. The next year, Lupita wrote, directed and produced the documentary In My Genes, which tells the story of the discriminatory treatment of Kenya’s albino population. Luckily, the documentary won first prize at the 2008 Five College Film Festival.

She entered the Yale School of Drama to improve her skills. At school, Lupita Nyong’o acted in numerous stage productions such as Uncle Vanya, Taming of the Shrew, Winter’s Tale and more. For her performance, she received the Herschel Williams Award for Distinguished Ability in Drama in the 2011/2012 academic year.
She rose to fame after graduating from Yale School and was cast in the historical drama 12 Years a Slave directed by Steve McQueen. Her role as Patsey in the 2013 film received critical acclaim.
